More than a market: Hoʻomau Hawaiʻi Market

More than a market: Hoʻomau Hawaiʻi Market

As a small business that is operated by myself and my ʻohana, we have to be selective about how many events we can participate in. We do our best to choose markets that are in alignment with our values, where we feel we can best represent our culture and people with the limited resources we have, and where we can connect with our community. We know that itʻs a big ask to request for our community to come out and see us, but there is one market that we are proud and honored to be accepted into as a vendor and are excited to ask our community to come and visit us: Hoʻomau Hawaiʻi Market.

Let me start off by saying that even though we have participated in several of the events put on by Hoʻomau Hawaiʻi Market (the only one we didnʻt apply for was the first - but we attended as shoppers), there is no guarantee that we will get accepted into this highly selective market. Honestly, we are glad to go through the process of applying for each one because it ensures that whoever is selected continues to be in alignment with what Hoʻomau Hawaiʻi Market stands for (and ensures that current vendors continue to make an impact and stay innovative). This also means that every time you go to a Hoʻomau Hawaiʻi Market, you get a curated experience!

Hoʻomau Hawaiʻi Market serves a vital role in preserving and promoting Hawaiian culture

By providing a platform for current creators who genuinely want to perpetuate Hawaiian culture, the market inspires future generations to build businesses that impact and shape the culture of Hawaii through an authentic lens. Furthermore, the market creates a space for people to gather who understand the value and importance of authentically representing Hawaii. It's not only about the products but also about how the businesses are built with Hawaiian values and weaving in programs and avenues to benefit the community.

Creating a platform for generations to come while incorporating tradition

The significance of markets like Hoʻomau Hawaiʻi Market cannot be overstated. They contribute to the preservation of Hawaiian culture by integrating modern interpretations of our culture as well as showcasing traditional Hawaiian products, such as lauhala weaving and other handicrafts. Moreover, the market provides a platform for performers to share Hawaiian music, dance, and other cultural expressions. By supporting these businesses and performers, the community can ensure that Hawaiian culture remains alive and well for generations to come.

Showcasing unique product creates economic stability and serves as a model to incorporate authenticity

It is also worth noting that markets like Hoʻomau Hawaiʻi Market play a crucial role in supporting the local economy. By promoting small, locally-owned businesses, the market helps to keep money within the community and supports the creation of jobs. This economic impact is particularly important in Hawaii, where many businesses are dependent on tourism. By showcasing unique, authentic Hawaiian products, events like Hoʻomau Hawaiʻi Market can create opportunities for our community to have sustainable jobs as well as attract visitors who are interested in experiencing authentic local culture and potentially (if not already) serve as the leading model for how markets in indigenous communities should be organized.

Overall, events like Hoʻomau Hawaiʻi Market are essential in promoting and preserving Hawaiian culture. They provide a platform for current and future creators to showcase their work and inspire others to build businesses that impact and shape the culture of Hawaii through an authentic lens. By supporting these markets, the community can help to ensure that Hawaiian culture remains vibrant and alive for generations to come.

We would absolutely love for you to come and visit, not just to shop with us, but to be part of a cultural event that impacts far beyond just Kakou Collective. The next Hoʻomau Hawaiʻi Market that we are proud to be part of is on July 1 +2.
