About the Design
Designed by Native Hawaiian wahine artist Kea Peters, the Naupaka Tee honors one of Hawaiʻi’s most beloved moʻolelo — a story of love, separation, and the enduring connection that bridges even the widest distance.
The story of Naupaka reminds us that love can overcome any distance — that what is meant to grow together will always find its way. Long ago, the chiefly woman Naupaka and a kind commoner named Kauʻi were separated by Pele, and from their sorrow bloomed two half-flowers: Naupaka kuahiwi (Scaevola gaudichaudii) of the mountains and Naupaka kahakai (Scaevola taccada) of the sea. Other species — like Scaevola coriacea (Dwarf Naupaka), Scaevola glabra (ʻŌhe Naupaka), and Scaevola kilaueae (Kīlauea Naupaka) — continue to carry this story between mountain and ocean.
At Kākou Collective, we tell stories of place through art. This design is a reflection of how love, connection, and resilience continue to grow — no matter the distance.
