About the Design
Designed by Native Hawaiian wahine artist Kea Peters, the Canoe Plants of Hawaiʻi Tee honors the plants that first arrived in Hawaiʻi with Polynesian voyagers — plants that carried nourishment, medicine, and meaning across the ocean.
This grid-style design features hala, kī, ʻulu, kukui, kalo, niu, ʻawa, maiʻa, and ʻuala, each one essential to daily life and symbolic of the deep relationship between people and ʻāina. These plants, known as “canoe plants,” reflect the wisdom and intention of those who cultivated a thriving life in a new land through resourcefulness and care.
At Kākou Collective, we celebrate the stories of place through art. This design serves as a reminder of where we come from — that what we carry with us, both physically and spiritually, has the power to sustain generations.
