Kalo (taro) revered as the elder brother of the Hawaiian people in creation stories, is a foundational canoe plant that has sustained and shaped Hawaiian culture for over a millenia. This versatile plant is utilized in its entirety - its starchy corm pounded into poi, a staple food, while its leaves, stems, and flowers are used in cooking, medicine, and ceremonial practices.
