Kalo (taro) revered as the elder brother of the Hawaiian people in creation stories, is a foundational canoe plant that has sustained and shaped Hawaiian culture for over a millenia. This versatile plant is utilized in its entirety - its starchy corm pounded into poi, a staple food, while its leaves, stems, and flowers are used in cooking, medicine, and ceremonial practices. Beyond its practical uses, kalo embodies the Hawaiian values of family, interconnectedness, and aloha ʻāina (love for the land), serving as a powerful symbol of Hawaiian identity and the reciprocal relationship between people and the land that nurtures them.
