Woven with Intention: The Story Behind Our Nahele Design

In ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, nahele refers to the forest—a place full of life, growth, and deep-rooted connection. Our Nahele design is a visual tribute to that connection, told through three lei styles, each carrying its own story of tradition, intention, and respect for the ʻāina.

The first lei in this design is a ti leaf lei made in the hilo style. Hilo is a twisting technique, where materials are worked together in a spiraled motion. It’s often the first style we learn when making lei—strong, simple, and foundational. Ti leaf is commonly used for this style, gathered fresh and twisted with care.

Next is a lei wili, a wrap-style lei that incorporates palapalai, lauaʻe, and ti. Wili involves wrapping plant materials around a base, layering them with patience and precision. This style honors the process of picking mindfully—only what’s needed, always with the intention to mālama the forest and ensure it continues to thrive. The plants in this lei reflect the beauty and depth of the nahele, and the kuleana we have to care for them.

The third lei is maile, also made in the hilo style. Maile isn’t twisted tightly—instead, it’s gently worked, allowing the vines to drape naturally as they’re woven together. Traditionally, maile was used to bind agreements and bring people and places together. It’s a lei that carries significance and ceremony, used to mark moments of unity and commitment.

Nahele is more than a design—it’s a reminder. A reminder to honor the plants that feed us, heal us, and adorn us. A reminder to learn the styles passed down through generations. And a reminder that when we practice these traditions with care and intention, we help ensure they live on.

You’ll find Nahele across multiple products in our shop—each one created to carry the mana of these lei and the forests they come from. Whether worn, gifted, or used daily, this design invites you to celebrate the pilina between people and place.
