About the Design
Designed by Native Hawaiian wahine artist Kea Peters, the Make Lei Not Pilikia Tee was created in response to a series of ongoing instances where our lei artwork was not only copied but directly traced.
This design features pua kalaunu, pikake, and pakalana, flowers often seen in lei and longtime favorites in our artwork. It serves as both a reminder and a call to action — to create, not imitate; to protect what is ours; and to move with integrity even when others do not.
Making lei is an act of intention — a process rooted in time, patience, and genuine connection. This design reminds us to stay focused on creation over conflict, on building community rather than contention.
At Kākou Collective, we continue to create from a place of aloha ʻāina and authenticity. When you wear this tee, you carry that message forward — standing as a voice for Native artists who create their own art and choosing to make lei, not pilikia.
