LĀ KŪ‘OKO‘A mĀkeke

On November 28, 1843, England and France signed the Anglo-Franco Proclamation, formally recognizing the Kingdom of Hawai‘i as an independent nation. Lā Kū‘oko‘a (Hawai‘i's Independence Day) is still celebrated by nā kanaka maoli (Native Hawaiians) because of the great pride that our people have in our one hānau (homeland).

We will be participating in a mākeke (market) hosted by the Waiwai Collective in honor of Lā Kū‘oko‘a. Here's what they wrote on their Instagram about the event:

In honor of this year’s celebrations, we wanted to showcase local vendors and entrepreneurs who encompass the spirit of aloha, people, and the ʻāina, in continuing to build the physical community. Staying true to the Waiwai Collective, Mauka Market, and NHSS, the mission of Aloha ʻĀina. Sourcing responsibly and locally as much as possible. Creating and providing products that mālama honua and the lāhui. For this market, we encourage the use of ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi through bilingual signage, bilingual social media promotional posts, and the use of common phrases for interacting with customers and vendors.

We hope to see you all there!
