In the ahupuaʻa of Waikōloa, native plants have persisted for generations in some of the roughest terrain in Hawaiʻi — wiliwili, uhiuhi, ālaʻi, māmane, pua kala, ʻilima, and lehua — each one a testament to the resilience of this place. It is a place where restoration work is actively returning the forest to what it once was, and where the story of Hawaiʻi's lowland dry forest is still being written. The Waikōloa Dry Forest Initiative has dedicated itself to protecting, promoting, and restoring this rare and sacred ecosystem. Art is how we found our way to this place — and it is how our founder and artist Kea Peters shares her kuleana, bringing these plants to life through her work so their story can travel further than the forest itself.
