Hanohano is strung with pīkake and ʻīlima. Although pīkake is not native to Hawaiʻi, it is a local favorite. ʻĪlima is indigenous to Hawaiʻi and are paper thin flowers. To make a lei like Hanohano, it could take over 1000 ʻīlima, so recipients of lei ʻīlima should feel very honored.

[Hanohano: Glorious, magnificent, noble, honored, stately, dignified. Kui: To string pierced objects, as flowers in a lei.]
